While walking home last weekend, friends and I stumbled upon an indoor market. We purchased bracelets for entry and spent the rest of the morning admiring the work of young Czech artists. There were clothing designers, painters, print-makers, and many others. I was especially captivated by a pair of young women who make furniture, including these colorful, hammock-like chairs. All of the work was incredibly unique and non-commercial. It was also exciting to know it was all produced in the general area. I wish I had the opportunity to explore more events like this, but my time in Prague was limited. I’ve also found it’s difficult to discover these kind of events as an outsider of the community. I was reminded that there is an enormous and informal network of contemporary art beneath the more visible and exclusive surface of galleries and museums.
